Speedcubing Articles & Guides

In-depth tutorials, tips, and strategies to help you improve faster

Most speedcubing advice online is either too generic ("practice more") or too advanced (aimed at sub-10 solvers who've already mastered the fundamentals). These guides are written for cubers in the middle, people averaging 15–45 seconds who are stuck and don't know exactly why.

Every article here is written from real experience, not theory. The techniques and timelines are honest: if something takes six months to master, the guide says six months. If a technique is only useful once you're already at a certain level, the guide says that too. The goal isn't to make improvement sound easy, it's to help you understand exactly what to work on, in what order, and why.

The articles cover the full CFOP improvement path: from optimizing your inspection window (Cross Planning) through building efficient pair-solving habits (F2L Look-Ahead) to eliminating recognition pauses in the last layer (OLL and PLL guides). There's also a practical buyer's guide for cubers who suspect their hardware is slowing them down, and a 30-day structured plan for anyone specifically targeting the sub-20 barrier.

Each guide is designed to be read once, applied over weeks, and returned to when you hit the next plateau. Bookmark the ones relevant to your current level and revisit the others as your solving improves.

Recommended Reading Order

Not sure where to start? Here's the recommended sequence based on where you are in your speedcubing journey.

If you're just starting with CFOP

  1. Read CFOP for Beginners, understand all four stages and get a clear learning roadmap before diving into algorithms.
  2. Start with Choosing Your First Speedcube, rule out hardware as a bottleneck early.
  3. Work through the OLL and PLL trainers on the main site to start building recognition alongside your algorithm learning.

If you're averaging 30–60 seconds

  1. Start with Choosing Your First Speedcube, rule out hardware as a bottleneck first.
  2. Read The 10 Most Important OLL Cases, knowing 2-look OLL properly is the fastest path to sub-30.
  3. Work through the OLL and PLL trainers on the main site until those cases feel automatic.

If you're averaging 20–30 seconds

  1. Read How to Break Sub-20 in 30 Days for a structured week-by-week plan.
  2. Read The Complete Guide to Cross Planning, inspection is typically where 3–5 seconds hide for this group.
  3. Read PLL Recognition Shortcuts and drill the families until recognition is instant.

If you're averaging 12–20 seconds

  1. Read Advanced F2L Look-Ahead Techniques, at this level, F2L efficiency and look-ahead are the primary levers.
  2. Return to PLL Recognition and push for two-sided recognition if you haven't yet.
  3. Study the OLL guide and ensure you have full 1-look OLL rather than relying on 2-look.
